About the artist

Subjects

I paint varied and original works of art specialising in horses, dogs and cats.
I specialise in pastels .

I pride myself in capturing the likeness and character of  the subject/s. I paint from photographs (this is more effective than painting animals from life as it enables me to get a far superior likeness) which I can either take my self for an additional fee  or use your own photos (subject to suitability).  If distance is a problem or sadly the subject is no longer with us then I will create the portrait entirely from your photos (again subject to suitability).

My paintings and prints include various dog breeds including Dobermans, Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Rottweilers, Weimaraners, Dalmatians, Golden Retrievers, Chocolate, Yellow and Black Labradors, Jack Russells, Great Danes, West Highland Terriers, Border Terriers, Border Collies, Bearded Collies, Whippets, Greyhounds, Lurchers, Irish Wolf Hounds, Bull Mastiffs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Springer Spaniels, Sharpei, Vizsla and cross breeds.

Horse breed paintings and prints include Andalusian, Thoroughbred, Welsh, Shetland, Irish Sporthorse, Danish, German and other  Warmbloods,  Cleveland Bay, Arab, American Quarter Horse.  I paint different types and colours  including,  Cobs, Hunters, Eventers, Dressage, Showjumpers, mare and foal, Horse and rider, Piebalds, Skewbalds, Palamino, Dun, Grey, Roan and any that I may have missed out.

Being a horse and dog owner  has given me a greater insight and knowledge of their anatomy, conformation and different character types .  Having been involved in dressage I understand the importance of engagement, outline and forwardness which gives a horse it’s character and gracefulness.

Pastel Portraits and Paintings - starting from £165

I will need reasonably good quality photographs to achieve best results. I can paint from most photos but the quality of the results will be as good as your photographs (if you have professional photographs or I will need the photographers permission in writing to paint from them due to copyright). I can create your portrait in any of my standard sizes that you require but for best results I would recommend my small size for cats and small dogs, medium for most dogs, large for very large dogs.
 
I can paint single portraits and paintings of horses, dogs, cats or people,  groups of subjects with detailed backgrounds. Your requirements can be tailor made to suit. We can discuss this on the telephone or in person if you are near enough for us to meet. I always involve clients in the planning of their paintings as much as possible so they can be confident in being satisfied with the result of their artwork. I supply paintings unframed.

If at all possible I usually like to meet my subjects  to make initial sketches, take notes and photographs to enable me to produce final painting in my studio. If distance or circumstance is a problem then I will create the portrait entirely from photos (subject to available photographs being appropriate).

I will need either digital or traditional, clear large as possible photographs to work from, please indicate which one you prefer me use to paint from You can send digital ones by e-mail or traditional ones by post. (please use board in your envelope and write please do not bend on the envelope to avoid damage in the post).

If the painting is to have multiple subjects I can work from separate photos, I can then make rough composition sketches for your approval. When the painting is finished I can e-mail you digital images for you too advise me if any minor adjustments are necessary I.e. coat or hair or eye colour etc.


I can visit (50 mile radius of Witham) and take a series of photographs but will charge a fee for this see rates.

How to order

If you wish to discuss a commission for any artwork please contact me either by email
or telephone 01376 517844. (UK only)

If you decide to proceed I will then send you a completed order form and and an acceptance of commission form. I then will require a deposit of 25% by personal cheque secure your order. (please see terms and conditions).

Your painting should be completed within about 8 weeks. The deadline for Christmas orders varies each year depending on my workload but as a guide usually I cannot take Christmas orders after the end of August.

Gift Vouchers

Gift vouchers may be purchased at any time and consist of a total or partial amount toward a commission or print.  I am happy to tailor make a commissioned painting to the recipients requirements, but any difference in total cost due to extra/differing requirements will be payable on completion of the painting - (for instance the recipient requires the addition of a bridle or subject in the painting).

About the artist

My interests in art and design were established in childhood. My father’s profession as an architect and my mother’s talent for oil painting were major influences for me. After leaving school, I studied, window display and art history, and some graphic design.  I qualified as a window dresser and continued to paint as a hobby, painting people, still life and animals for many years until it eventually became my career.
